Well, what do you know? Turns out you don’t actually need to invest in a Nook e-reader to enjoy the experience on your existing smartphone. And considering that the average Android smartphone will boast a display larger than your face within 2 years (if current trends continue, anyway), we’d say we could be onto something good here. At any rate, B&N’s own eBookstore app is now available for Google’s dear mobile OS, landing just weeks after Amazon pushed its Kindle app out into the same marketplace. Of course, B&N’s not shying away from the competition, dubbing its app “the only Android e-reader application to offer eBook lending.” It’s available to download now on devices rocking Android 1.6 or above, and yes, even Android users can pick up on another platform where you leave off on your phone. Fancy.

According to Boy Genius Report, the iPhone 3G is very likely to be discontinued. Apple has reportedly stopped supplying AT&T stores with the 8 GB iPhone 3G. Additionally, the Australian online Apple Store lists the iPhone 3G as “currently unavailable,” and UK carrier O2 has altered its ordering options in a way that makes it impossible to purchase the low-end iPhone.

It’s not at all shocking that the iPhone 3G is most likely about to be discontinued. The two-year-old hardware is relatively anemic even compared to its successor, the 3GS. Because of its lower RAM and CPU speed, the iPhone 3G won’t enjoy all the benefits of iPhone OS 4.0, particularly multitasking. Once the iPhone 3G is discontinued, one of two things will probably happen — see them both after the link below.

It’s Nokia Capital Market Day again which means that the boys from Espoo are fawning over investors and giving them a reason to stick around in 2010. And you know what? It sure sounds promising for gadget nerds. Why the optimism? Easy: Nokia is hell-bent on redefining the user experience of its Symbian devices. To quote CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, “In 2010, we will drive user experience improvements, and the progress we make will take the Symbian user interface to a new level.” To bolster this proclamation, the very first bullet point listed under Nokia’s Devices and Services operational priorities is “improve our user experience” — something that would thrill us to no end if it happens.

The revamped Symbian UI is set to deliver on two “major product milestones” in the first and second halves of the year. Nokia will also deliver its first Maemo 6 “mobile computer” in the second half of 2010 flanked by a significantly increased proportion of “touch and/or QWERTY devices” in its smartphone portfolio. It’s worth noting that all the discussion is around Symbian, just a single mention of Maemo and its “iconic user experience” in the forward looking press release. Developers will be happy to hear that Nokia will also continue to scale services geographically while continuing to enhance its developer tools like QT4.6 announced yesterday. Financially speaking, Nokia expects to see the erosion of its average selling price slowed compared to recent years. That’s good as Nokia attempts to grow its margins. However, while Nokia expects mobile device volumes to be up approximately 10% in 2010 across the industry, it sees its own mobile device volume market share as flat in 2010, compared to 2009.

Okay kids, this is starting to get a little out of hand now. Palm has once again pushed back at Apple, releasing webOS 1.2.1 today that “resolves an issue preventing media sync from working with the latest version of iTunes.” What’s that issue you might ask? Well, I’d say the fact that Apple isn’t too happy that Palm is breaking all sorts of rules to make their device appear as an iPhone.

It all started back in May, when it was determined that plugging a Palm Pre into a Mac will allow it to sync content with iTunes with no issues. This honeymoon period didn’t last too long and once Apple figured out what was going on, Apple swiftly released an update to iTunes that prevented syncing from non-Apple devices.

Apparently, that wasn’t good enough for Palm and it was determined that they were trying to make the Pre appear to be an Apple device when it was plugged in for syncing. Palm turned around and released yet another webOS update that fixed the sync and it worked well until the USB-IF got involved and sided with Apple, telling Palm they had to cease and desist.

Looks like Palm is back on the attack and this latest release is sure to stir up the pot once again.

The iPhone Dev Team has confirmed that the jailbreak for the iPhone 3.0 firmware is already ready to go. Of course, the team will probably wait until version 3.0 is available (“this summer”) to all before releasing their jailbreak.

The team is issuing a warning to YellowSnow users (their iPhone unlock software) to stay away from the firmware 3.0 because YellowSnow is not ready yet and could create an irreversible change.

The Palm Pixi has officially arrived, and if you’re an avid reader of Engadget (you’d better be), this device should look a little bit familiar to you. We first broke specs and images of the phone — codenamed Eos and the alternately-spelled “Pixie” — back in April, when we nabbed what appeared to be a leak of a new, Centro-esque phone headed to AT&T. Today, Palm has announced that the Pixi — a tiny, sleek webOS-based handset — will be coming to Sprint this holiday season. The phone will hit shelves sans-WiFi (EV-DO Rev. A only here), with 8GB of storage onboard (a nice bump up from the rumored 4GB), 2 megapixel camera (with flash), a full QWERTY keyboard, and a minute, 2.63-inch, 320 x 400 capacitive display (guess they didn’t get that HTC memo).

Along with the new handset, Palm will offer five artist-designed back covers in the “Palm Pixi Artist Series” — similar to Zune Originals and Dell’s Design Studio laptops — which can be purchased separately… of course. Touchstone owners take heart: those backs, as well as a separate black backing that you’ll also pay extra for, are all compatible with the accessory. In addition to the hardware, Palm will be introducing a native Facebook app when the Pixi hits, as well as new Yahoo! and LinkedIn integration for Synergy. Right now no date for launch has been set, though Palm says the phone will be ready in time for the holidays. The company is also mum on price, but coupled with the news that Sprint will be slimming the Pre’s entry point down to $149.99, we have to assume it’s going to be in the $99-or-less ballpark. We had a chance to play around with the new phone, so read on after the break for our initial, early impressions.

Now that Nokia’s Maemo-powered N900 is looking mighty nice and official, the company’s Germany and Italian arms have no problem going ahead and taking your hard-earned Euros in exchange for a pre-order. Both sites are actually listing it for €599 (US $860), or €99 more than what we heard yesterday. A pretty huge discrepancy, to be sure, but it’s not unlike Nokia to have a flagship phone fluctuate in price. That October release date is a ways off, but if you’re absolutely convinced this must be in your pocket by Halloween, you know where to go.
